The Denton Animal Shelter Foundation Inc. (DASF), in cooperation with the City of Denton animal shelter, is holding a major kick-off event for the Adopt-A-Thon phase of the $100,000 ASPCA Rachael Ray Challenge. On Saturday, Aug. 4, from 10 am to 5 pm and on Sunday, Aug. 5, from noon to 5 pm, the shelter will have festivities such as low-cost pet vaccinations and microchips, free food, free t-shirts to all adopters, and fun activities. All dogs will be $25 to adopt and all cats will be $10, including vet services.
Texas Coalition for the Protection of Animals (TCAP) Clinic will provide reduced-price vaccinations for dogs and cats, as well as microchips. This service will be available on Saturday from 10 am to noon, and on Sunday from noon to 2 pm. Dogs should be on leashes; cats should be in carriers.
“This Adoption Challenge is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to the many animals that are available through the shelter,” said Police Capt. Scott Fletcher. “We encourage people to come and find their new best friend.”
This event begins the second phase of the competition for between $5,000 and $125,000 in grants for immediate use in the shelter to help the animals. DASF was selected as one of 50 nonprofits nationwide to continue in the challenge. In this phase, the shelter must increase adoptions by 300 animals from Aug. 1 to Oct. 31 over the same period last year. DASF is raising adoption subsidy funds to reduce adoption fees and encourage more people to visit the shelter.
Other initiatives to encourage adoptions include: opening the shelter every Sunday in Aug. from noon to 5 pm; “Two-Tone Tuesdays” when every Tuesday from Aug. through Oct., all pets with predominately two colors are half-price; “Black Fridays” when all black pets are half-price.
